Your health and gaming

Quoted from "Vilya"

Every few years, a news story comes along about a seemingly healthy gamer falling over and dying. Why does this happen and what can we do to keep ourselves safe? While there is no single thing you can do to guarantee this will never happen to you, there are things you can do together to boost your chances of staying healthy.

If you run a Google search on “Gamer Dies”, up will pop a whole host of links you can click and read. Most of them have glaringly obvious similarities, such as, being a hardcore or avid gamer and playing for long stretches without breaks. And therein lies the problem. Inactivity has long been known to cause health issues, but this has come more to the forefront since gaming has become more popular.

The Medical profession has long said that people on long flights, or that are sedentary for long periods of time should get up and stretch and move around. They have known for years that blood clots can form in the deep veins when people sit for too long with little to no movement. This medical term is Deep Vein Thrombosis. Sometimes, these blood clots will break loose and get into the bloodstream. If they are small, they might not cause too many issues, but if they are bigger and get into the lungs. When this happens, it can cut off the oxygen intake. This is known as Pulmonary Embolism. Now, not everyone who gets DVT or PE will die as it is very treatable. The problem lies with not knowing someone has them, you cannot treat what you do not know.

So back to gamers and this potentially fatal medical condition. When someone is hardcore or avid, they might sit and play their game for many hours without moving much. The way to prevent this a very simple rule of thumb, for every hour you play take a break. Get up, stretch, walk around, do some jumping jacks or whatever will get your heart pumping and blood flowing!

Instead of ordering pizza and drinking sodas or energy drinks…grab a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables and some water. Too many fatty or unhealthy foods can also play a key factor in health issues by clogging arteries. It is okay to have cheat days, just don’t make them happen more often than your healthy days. ;)

Make sure you get your yearly check-ups with your physicians and let them know your habits, even the unsavory ones. Being completely honest with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring you get the proper medical advice and treatments. If you smoke and avidly game, your risk for many things is increased. Knowing this, your doctor can adjust his advice accordingly to help keep you safe and healthy.

You might think “Why is a gaming industry employee telling me all this?”. Well my response is simple, we want you to play our game..this much is very true. And we love it when you play for hours and hours…but not at the risk of losing you permanently. We would much prefer to take a break and get some exercise and stay healthy than sit sedentary for multiple hours at the risk of your health. We prefer long term customer retention, so we need you to stay fit!

Now that you’re done reading this, get up and move around…get the blood flowing, and grab a cookie…you did good today!
